National Convention of Retirees

It was exciting to see so many "retired" trade unionists using their skills in a new venue. I couldn't come at a better time with the economic crisis hammering pension plans and robbing retirees of a lifetime of savings. My old friend Art Kube, who was president of the BC Fed during the halcyon days of "Solidarity 83" had invited me to make a musical contribution and of course i was glad to accept.

I hadn't seen Ray Haynes, former secretary of the BC Fed since he left office in 1973. He was one of those who led the fight to bring us back into the "House of Labour" after the dark days of McCathyism. Didn't recognize Ray as he was much "leaner" than he was 36 years ago. Wonderful also to meet so many other veteran luminaries of labour who are still toiling in the "vineyards of democracy".

My music could hardly match such an array of talent, but they compensated by singing up a storm.
